What
is the Manchester Buddhist Centre?
The Manchester
Buddhist
Centre is part of
the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, an international movement
dedicated to the application of Buddhist principles in contemporary
society. The FWBO was founded in London in 1967 by Sangharakshita, an
English Buddhist monk who had returned from twenty years of Buddhist
practice and study in India.
The FWBO
aims
to maintain Buddhism as a living tradition, responding creatively to
the changing conditions of the modern West. There are over eighty FWBO
centres worldwide including our centre here in Manchester. Visit

Meditation
and Buddhism in Manchester
The Manchester
Buddhist Centre
(FWBO Manchester) was founded in 1977-8. Since then, it has taught the
essential principles of meditation and Buddhism to thousands of
Mancunians. In July 1996, the new Manchester Buddhist Centre in Turner
Street, in the Northern Quarter, was opened by Sangharakshita.
Once
a derelict Victorian warehouse, the Manchester Buddhist Centre opened
in 1996 as a place of simplicity and beauty in city centre. It offers a
calm and relaxing atmosphere amidst the busyness of city life. There
are two meditation halls - one available during Centre opening hours
for personal meditation. Also a bookshop, reference library and the
award-winning Earth vegetarian cafe. Drop in for a chat, to look
around, to meditate, meet friends, join a course or just take a break
from business or shopping.
Meditation
Meditation
is
a way of becoming more alive and aware of our moment-to-moment
experience. All its effects, from simple relaxation to spiritual
insight, follow from this. In the short term, meditation can provide an
antidote to stress and a means of becoming calmer and more
self-possessed; in the long term it is a tool with which we can
transform ourselves. In meditation we learn to respond creatively to
our experience and use awareness to undo restrictive habitual
responses.
We teach two essential Buddhist meditation practices:
Mindfulness of Breathing, which enhances awareness and peace of mind;
and Metta Bhavana, or the development of
loving-kindness, which brings
about a gentle but radical transformation of our emotional world.
Meditation classes and courses are open to all - you need not be
interested in Buddhism. See our meditation

Buddhism
All
of us share a desire to avoid suffering and achieve happiness.Yet,
according to the Buddha’s teachings, our thoughts, actions
and lack of
understanding of the way life works prevent us from experiencing deeper
happiness.
Buddhism
offers practical teachings to help us contact the clarity, contentment
and understanding that lie within us all. It can be practised by
anyone, irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation or cultural
background.

The
Look of the Centre
Manchester
Buddhist Centre was intended as an oasis amid the city and was designed
with this
in mind. Skilled designers and artists (including Buddhist artists
Chintamani and Sahaja) helped to create the environment and many people
comment on the striking beauty of the building. It's worth a visit just
to look around. To
