Manchester Buddhist Centre - History

Visiting our beautiful building

We welcome visitors to our historic building and have been awarded the North West Multi-Faith Tourism Association’s Marque of Excellence for our outstanding welcome to visitors, tourists, and people new to the Centre.

Our receptionist can give you information about the building’s restoration and the many beautiful artworks, including the striking ironwork by Sahaja

Moving to the Northern Quarter

In July 1996, we moved from a house in Chorlton to Turner Street in the centre of Manchester. Once a derelict Victorian warehouse, our building is now a place of simplicity and beauty.

Vision

Many original historical features were retained, like the brickwork, staircase and huge windows, and recycled materials used wherever possible.

The building’s conversion, carried out mainly by volunteers, became a symbol for internal transformation, as the externals were stripped back and made anew.
